John is currently working on a new series, (working title) "New Spaces". In this he continues to explore the relationship of fine art and art photography within his practice.
"The Hall" from this series is on exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, as part of the RHAs' 182nd Annual Show.
This is the first major piece of work of John's to be exhibited in Ireland in 5 years. Johns work is mostly seen in China where he has been exhibiting since 2007.
"These are works that the longer you explore and experience them, the more you are rewarded. I am always very taken by the history and the atmosphere of a space".
"In the work "The Hall" I wanted to capture a silence, a calmness and draw the viewer in and beyond the space. In a way, what looks like the main theme of a gathering around tables, works as a sub narrative within the composition. I found this sub narrative moved me towards becoming conscious of not what I could see in front of me in this work, but rather what was absent. In a way it's not too dissimilar to taking a space like Velazquez "Las Meninas" and emptying it out".
The exhibition runs from 28th May to the 18th August 2012 at the RHA, 15 Ely Place, Dublin 2
